The Science Behind Grounding
Groundwell — The Science
Why Your Body
Needs the Earth
The science of earthing is simple, ancient, and backed by decades of peer-reviewed research. Here's what's actually happening when you ground.
01 — What Is Earthing
The oldest medicine
humans forgot about
Earthing — also called grounding — is the practice of making direct physical contact with the Earth's surface. Bare feet on grass. Skin on soil. A body connected to the ground the way it was designed to be.
For most of human history, we slept on the ground, walked without shoes, and lived in constant contact with the Earth. Then came rubber soles, elevated beds, concrete floors, and high-rise buildings. The connection was severed — quietly, gradually, and with consequences we're only beginning to understand.
Earthing is simply the act of restoring that connection. And the research shows that when you do, the body responds in profound ways.
02 — The Flow of Electrons
The Earth is a battery.
Your body needs it.
The Earth's surface carries a subtle but constant negative electrical charge — a vast reservoir of free electrons, continuously replenished by lightning strikes and solar activity. When you connect to it, electrons flow into your body.
These electrons act as natural antioxidants, neutralising free radicals — the unstable molecules linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, and chronic disease. It's not a metaphor. It's measurable physics.
Research published in peer-reviewed journals has shown that grounding reduces blood viscosity, normalises cortisol rhythms, lowers inflammatory markers, and improves the function of the autonomic nervous system — all within hours of contact.
03 — The Modern Disconnection
We built a world that
insulates us from ourselves
Rubber and plastic-soled shoes. Elevated beds. Concrete and synthetic floors. These materials are electrical insulators — they block the flow of electrons from the Earth to your body entirely.
The average person today spends nearly all of their time electrically isolated from the ground. At the same time, we're surrounded by electromagnetic fields from Wi-Fi, smartphones, and appliances that add to the body's electrical load.
Many researchers believe this chronic disconnection is a significant — and largely overlooked — contributor to the modern epidemic of sleep disorders, chronic inflammation, fatigue, and stress-related illness.
"Emerging evidence shows that contact with the Earth — whether outdoors or through an indoor grounding system — may be a simple, natural, and yet profoundly effective environmental strategy."

What the research
actually shows
These aren't anecdotes. Each of the following benefits has been observed in clinical studies and published in peer-reviewed journals.
05 — What to Expect
Everyone's experience
is different
Grounding is not a drug. It doesn't override your biology — it supports it. Here's what people typically experience:
- Many people feel calmer and sleep better within the first few nights. The nervous system begins to settle almost immediately.
- For some, benefits are noticeable within days. For others — particularly those dealing with long-term inflammation — it may take weeks of consistent use.
- A small number of people initially feel a tingling sensation. This is normal — it's circulation improving as your body reconnects with the Earth's charge.
- Athletes often notice reduced muscle soreness and faster recovery after training — sometimes dramatically so.
- If you're already in excellent health, the effects may be subtler — but grounding continues to work as ongoing maintenance and prevention.
- Stay well-hydrated. Dehydration reduces the body's electrical conductivity and can diminish the effects of grounding.
